Using the very latest bridge equipment and sonar techniques, and working in close collaboration with scientists from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) and the Marine Resources Assessment Group (MRAG) , the "Sil" and her crew engage in annual icefish surveys around South Georgia in the Antarctic waters to carefully assess fish stocks and thereby ensure that the resource is carefully monitored and managed. The fish stocks in the Antarctic are controlled and regulated by the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources which is an international body. The results of our research are presented annually to CCAMLR and used to set quotas and regulation for future seasons.

All of this is carried out in close conjunction with the Government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands who have the responsibility of maintaining effective control over the fish stocks in fishing area 48.3
